The Township of South Orange Village is governed by a unique charter form that bears many of the traits of a village government, whereas Ridgewood is governed by the council-manager form. Loch Arbour, the other one of the four New Jersey villages, likewise utilizes the commission style of administration.

On March 23, 1897, Overpeck Township was established within Ridgefield Township to be coextensive with Ridgefield Park village and to oversee a Board of Education. A portion of the village that was acquired between 1921 and 1926 was taken from Teaneck and Bogota. Overpeck Township changed its name to Ridgefield Park Township on May 31, 1938.The topography of the area inspired the village’s name.
The village’s Fourth of July Parade, which dates back to 1894, is reputed to be among the oldest in the nation and the longest-running celebration of its kind in New Jersey. In 2009, the community decided to keep its parade going but did away with its fireworks, citing the $50,000 expense in light of the challenging economic times.
